Why There’s a Poem Today

because this afternoon there will be rain

because I am meeting Marianna for coffee

because Ahava’s taking dance class

because I can watch the movie DIANE

because maybe I’ll make Julia Child’s beef stew with small pearl onions

because our neighbors will come for a holiday drink

because Saturday is the day to rest from the news

because last night we celebrated birthdays with old friends

because I miss my friend Linda

because there is a new foot massage place on Broadway

because I saw Jerry Garcia once a long time ago

because there are four library books next to my bed

because we have smoked salmon for breakfast

because even on Saturday there are poems

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. I love this poem about the day-in-a-life of Esther. Makes me think we can all find poetry in our lives or make our lives poetic! Thank you.

  2. This made me grin and reminded me of all my ‘becauses.’ Thank you.
    Because there’s lots to do
    and
    because it’s begun

  3. So did you see Jerry Garcia walking in midtown Manhattan, or performing with The Grateful Dead? The closest I got was the last time I had Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia, before I went on a sugarless diet.
