What Matters to Me (COVID)

People, not just good friends

not just fair friends but the woman

I talked to today on the bench

near the Museum of Natural history,

Ella, around my age,

who wanted to explain to me, a stranger,

the complexity of her life:

two sons fourteen grandchildren

three great grands none of the sons

married the mothers of the children although

both sons are married now and if that

wasn’t enough, she said, she currently

has five boyfriends two say they are

entrepreneurs and on Saturday mornings

when she can she meets her ex for breakfast.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  2. Just a quick word to let you know how much I enjoy reading your daily poems. You always bring a smile and tuck in something good for me to learn. So it’s well past time to send a line of THANK YOU and stay well. Loved your conversation with the lady on the bench! -JoMae
