We Are the Older Couple In Our Building Now

When I moved in so many years ago

maybe 38 maybe 39 I was young  an older couple

in the building  lived on separate floors.  They were Always Courting.

Herbert Vail and Gertrude.  Every Friday Gertrude

would get her hair done into a swoop and Herbert knocked on her door

with flowers and chocolates she ate boxes of chocolates this was way before

Functional Medicine, or any anti-chocolate dictates and They Would Go Dancing.

One day Gertrude who told me she was an Office Administrator she looked efficient,

formal, her breasts a permanent shelf, one day Gertrude knocked on my door

and said If Anything Happens To Herbert or Me We’ve Decided to Call You Because

You Brought Us Chocolates on Valentines Day and she asked for my number.  They

danced for years and then moved (they wouldn’t say that they were going to live together

but they did) to Florida and now many years later here we are, older couple in the

building now.  Yesterday our neighbor a young woman from Brazil she works in TV

decorates her door with paper cutouts she said to me in the elevator If You Ever Need Help

Call Me and then she reached into her bag and handed me a bar of Brazilian

chocolate.  It’s almost Valentine’s Day she said.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. love this poem. love
that you write about ordinary everyday happenings and make them special. and I especially love your titles. they always draw me in

  2. This kind of out of the blue, reflexive action occurring over time almost like an equation, makes me think, perhaps, not only is there a Supreme Creator, but that it listens, remembers and has a sense of humor.

  3. I remember Gertrude and Mr Vail very well
I rode the same elevator with them for over 35 years
I share those evenings over and over in my mind
