Thanksgiving, and Thanks

Never bought a gratitude book

still I want to give thanks

I am thankful (and grateful)

for other people so many

other people some are friends

I haven’t seen for a thousand years

and then they come over or call up

the old fashioned way on the phone

they know how to talk and

my friend Barbara I could listen to her

every single day of my life and

a volunteer named Sheldon he walked into

Betty’s hospital room a few days ago

told us about various businesses various wives

he is Available Now

Breena Clarke she sent a link

for Sidney Bechet’s When the Saints Go Marching In

we listened many times

Chesa Boudin grandson of two people

who made a difference in life

and in mine he won the DA election

in San Francisco despite his Big Opposition

I am thankful for my Chosen Family

even those who are endlessly difficult

happy that now in this peculiar

mysterious period of life when suddenly

body parts mean something else besides

Body Parts and hope

that I see in  every day people

not every single person but nearly

that hope is always there and  so

are people in every single place

including Price Chopper and the subway

and this morning outside my window are the Macy’s

Day Parade Balloons,  surrounded

by throngs of people happy

and telling each other to look.

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. I just got a message from this comment site that “your comment appears to be spam.” At least they gave me the benefit of a doubt.
Esther, loved Thanksgiving. Happy T to everyone.
When I was a kid I always worried that the folks who held the strings to all the Macy’s balloons would get lifted up balloon and all by a big puff of wind and disappear into the sky.
    So far, so good.

  2. I have vivid memories of the night before blowing up the balloons party. Happy Thanksgiving, with cranberry sauce and all.
