Syrian Poets, or Why I Love the Middle East Every Single Country Including Syria

Last night we went with TWO VERY GOOD POETS, Marianela Medrano and Ralph Nazareth, to hear more Very Good Poets, from Syria. Adonis to Lina Yazji.

We all went to
CUNY Graduate Center
nondescript
as every
classroom
entirely full
Syrian poets
translators
teachers of their poems
and so
a different room
from Latina poets
Indian or
American poets rich guttural
dark hairy room
listen to those Arabic
voices language
of jasmine and pine nuts
from deep in the heart
from the throat
from somewhere I’d like
to know.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.
