SOWETO

We spent the day
with Percy Ndaba
with his family
in Soweto.
We visited sites:
Mandala’s house
Desmond Tutu’s
Hector Pieterson
rebellion park.

Percy’s Aunt Doris
raised him and four
other kids
small three room house
she was a school teacher
Moses her husband
a bike messenger
sixteen people came
to meet us
many were children
we ate stews chicken
mango juice
beet root
their friend Pumla
she teaches
57 middle school children
When we left
Aunt Doris hugged us
you are my
family now she said.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. So beautiful to hear about your extended family and to see those important sites in SA. Brings tears to my eyes.
