Passover Tonight

The Baal Shem Tov

holy man with a sense of humor (wouldn’t you

like to hear his jokes) said a special meal

should happen tonight.

Second Rabbi Shalom Dov Ber added

the dictum of four cups of wine.

Tonight we will meet for dinner:

South Africans, Chileans, Egyptians, Jews,

Indians, Chinese, Filippinos, French, Cubans, Communists, Capitalists.

All family now.

Although that might not be just

what the Baal Shem Tov had in mind,

we celebrate in a Druze restaurant

Dominican waitress named Marianela.

Once she was married to an Israeli who died .

African husband now.

Chag Pesach Sameyach she says.

And then, Next Year Someplace

Where Everyone’s Welcome.

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.
