Other People, Again

Dear EVERYONE: I posted this poem today and it WENT SOMEWHERE ELSE. I wish I could tell you where. So I’m posting it again right here.

Yesterday
I met Lisa
for lunch.
Our waiter
wanted
to join
us too.
The restaurant
was empty
anyway.
Before she
arrived he
poured my tap
not bottled
he said that he was
Just a Waiter
now but that
wasn’t always
the case.
Although he
was OK with being
Just a Waiter Now.
He had been
a movie producer
on some
Significant Indies.
Before
everything else
happened. Did I
want to hear
about Everything Else?
Yes but what
I wanted more
was lunch with Lisa.
He made some lunch
suggestions
I would get Calamari
if this were my lunch
he said) and on our way
out he called to us:
Is That The Way
You Both Say
Goodbye
To Me?

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. I received your e-chapbook. Today you sent an e-mail asking if I did and what I thought. But “reply” wasn’t clickable. So I’m telling you here that I liked the selection of poems and I especially liked 10. But may you never find your secret sentence because then you might stop writing. (And it made me think, fleetingly, of the Victorian song “The Lost Chord.”)

  2. Hi Esther! i see the word “again” popping up again. I think it’s a good sign. When our daughter, Karen, was seven she created her own word. it was “optimystical” as in “I’m feeling optimystical today.” And when she said it, we would say, ‘Me too!’ And it always made her smile. That’s how we feel about your words.

    1. Jules……I am Robert Apter, a cousin of yours. Your mother, Vera, was one of my first cousins. I am not sure that our paths have crossed but I did meet your sister and her husband George at the last family reunion at Westport in I believe the late 1980’s. Vera was there and I have a generational picture of all of us that were there. I would love to meet you if you would be interested as well. I believe we both live on the upper west side. I am at 108 th St and Riverside Drive……..best…Bob (646-345-0620)
