Nova Scotia 4 (Don’t Miss This)

I have wanted to write a guide book series in verse for YEARS.  Five people in Positions of Authority said NO. They don’t matter any more.

Halifax, NS

When we asked Other People to tell us about their visits

to Nova Scotia where we should go they were cheerfully vague

(we loved it 40 years ago, or this:

don’t miss the sea as though we could)

many times I’ve proposed a Don’t Miss This

series of books in verse. Maybe starting with New York.

Halifax full of Don’t Miss This’s.

Fresh Oysters  everywhere all day long.

Used bookstore cafe  called TRIDENT

Russians in a new Russian

neighborhood  Immigrant Museum with immigrant guides.

We all try to understand.

Young Filipino girl her mother was a mail order bride

married a handsome Canadian he worked in a fishery

mother worked 70 hours a week to send money home

for her poor town  in Halifax now where the girl

tries hard to understand

what is Canada what is the Philippines

who she is.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.
