Letter from the Ivory Coast

My friend Kay asked this morning if I could write a poem to get rid of REPUBLICANS. I can’t. What I will say is this. Daily life happens no matter what. People. Always people. As some readers of my blog know, I am especially enamored of the articulate email spammers from far away who send tragic tales, ending in large amounts of money (FOR ME, and FOR ALL THEIR READERS.) Here’s a letter I got two days ago. If you get them, send them to me. I think they would be a terrific illustrated book (entitled Death and Money!!!). Maybe one of my favorite illustrators Sarah Jane Lappe would make them come alive. It’s not he list for ONE DAY.

My name is
Evelyn Zeina Nahem.
I am hospitalized
in the hospital (sic)
I am very very sick.
I had been married to
Mr. Naham ambassador
to Angola for 18 years.
He died quickly.
We have no children.
Now I am dying too.
I have 10.5 million
dollars in the bank
right here on the Ivory Coast.
I want to give 80% of my money
to an orphanage and
20% to you ESTHER COHEN.
All you
have to do is
Follow My Instructions.
Please. And God will
help you. I am
sure of that. If I
die tomorrow I’d like
to know that you
help me. So send me
all your information
With God.
Your Friend
Sister Evelyn Zeina Nahem

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. thanks for sharing this Esther! It is hard to imagine how many of theses things are going around, and people continue to fall for them!
