KURT ELLING, OR WHAT MAGIC IS

LAST NIGHT WE WENT TO THE ELEVEN O’CLOCK SHOW OF KURT ELLING AT BIRDLAND. HE’S THERE FOR TWO MORE NIGHTS (THERE ARE EARLY SHOWS. YOU CAN SIT AT THE BAR. IT’S NOT SO EXPENSIVE) WE HAVE SEEN HIM FIVE TIMES. FOR THE PEOPLE NEXT TO US IT WAS THEIR EIGHTH EXPERIENCE. ((I DIDN’T FIND OUT ANY MORE. PETER DIDN’T WANT ME TO TALK TO THEM.)) FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO LOVE MUSIC AND SINGERS AND THE MAGIC OF PERFORMANCE AND JUST AN AMAZING ONCE IN A LIFETIME PERFORMANCE, GO. IF THERE’S ANY POSSIBLE WAY YOU CAN.

WE WERE IN PURSUIT
OF MAGIC WHEN WE
WENT TO HEAR KURT ELLING.
THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WE
DON’T FEEL ENOUGH
OF WHAT MAGIC IS WHEN WE
GET CAUGHT IN DETAILS
IMPOSSIBILITIES
IMAGINED OR REAL
INTERVENE WHEN WE
DON’T FEEL
THAT LARGE AND ENCOMPASSING
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL
SURPRISE THAT LIFE
CAN BE.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. Love him. I lived in Chicago for many years, and saw him almost every week for two years when he was standing at The Green Mill. Thank you for sharing your meditation!
