Khanyi Got Into College

For those of you who read this poems regularly more or less (regularly doesn’t mean EVERY DAY) I wanted to let you know that Khanyi got into college.  You may or may not know that she is amazing, that she is from South Africa, and that because she is an international student, the whole College Thing is more complicated than it might be otherwise. College college college.

A few days ago, Khanyi got into college.

Where you go how much money

you  get who will be there when you arrive what

happens then so unpredictable

always people  interesting

unexpected in every single place  my father went to college

Cornell class of 1928 his roommate Solly Stein invented

a hot air blower that dries hands in restaurant bathrooms

one of my early college roommates Donna Downes said I

was the first Jew she ever saw.  Now Khanyi

will have a college roommate too.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.
