Kenny and Milly had children. Two children.
Donna and Joe. Work. Marriage. Children They saw one another
often enough. They were not a close family.
Close was not their way. They were a family that
came and went when coming and going was required.
Milly poured Ken a cup of black coffee. She gave it to him
in his usual brown mug. Do you think I should tell Donna
and Joe? she said. She didn’t call them out of the blue.
Sunday mornings was when they’d say hello. Ken was not
a telephone person. Why don’t you wait said Ken. There’s
nothing much to say right now. If they send me away somewhere
then you’ll have no choice. Away said Milly. This is a first offense.
Isn’t that how it works? You watch too much television said Ken.
Life isn’t the same as Law and Order. And Milly for the first time
in a while actually laughed.
