Ida B. Wells, and poems

Why don’t I write poems about  Ida B. Wells,

Memphis founder of sociology documenting

lynching Ida B. Wells activist suffragette

I made an Ida B. Wells poster once why

do I write most of the time about women who have chickens

or the man I met at the 34th Street subway stop

just arrived from Georgia a country he said was in

in the Caucus region of Eurasia. Can I practice

English on you he asked. I will ask one question.

Only one he said in case I would change my mind.

Do you go to the psychiatrist?

he asked. Yes I said. And he got on the train and I

told this story to the psychiatrist and asked her

why I don’t write about Ida B. Wells.

Let me tell you why I’m here, and why I hope you’ll join me.
I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I’m here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.
