How to Get More Readers For My Poems

Yesterday

while I was waiting for the C train

going downtown I asked

a woman on the bench

sitting next to me something

I liked about her although

I couldn’t tell you what yesterday

I said Would You Mind Telling Me

What You Think About Poems

and she answered right away:

I Don’t Like Them.

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. I think the word “poem” is off-putting. People have an idea it means former writing by mostly dead white guys that is inaccessible to ordinary people. I used to think I hated poetry (and opera). I love yours but consider it an exception. Along with Mary Oliver and Yehuda Amichai and my three grandchildren who write gorgeous poems so effortlessly.

  2. The person probably didn’t read much. The only poem they might have been exposed to could have been “ Mary had a little lamb” or the like
