How To Find Your Song and Sing It

(for Steve Zeitlin)

You must
You really want to
You’ve imagined
Fantasized even started
once or twice
or twenty eight times
bought the right size notebook
harmonica canvas dancing shoes
camera, guitar, paint brush
perfect uniball pen
perfect large yellow umbrella
perfect color deep deep green
you dreamt your song
and woke up singing
drew your lover
on an envelope
started a novel
twelve years ago
two yellow pads full
of characters names beginning with Arlette
you know the best possible
opening line for your poem
background color
for your enormous painting
plot for your children’s book
starring Billy a transgender pig
you know the story
you’ve wanted to tell for 42 years now
you know too
you truly know
big secret guaranteed actual path
way you can really truly Do This
large or small surprising red miracle
starting right now with
this poem, this very poem,
which ends and begins with you

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. I love your poem. It is about all our beginnings. Last month we were shooting a bar scene. They asked me if I’d do a cameo, sit at a table, pretend to be writing. I wrote: What would have happened if Karen hadn’t said, “Dad you need someone in your life like Annie.” Let’s talk to the dog tonight. We’ll tell him we need a vacation. It won’t be easy but we can help him understand. He’s seen us falling asleep on the sofa when it’s only 8:30PM. He knows we’re exhausted.
