Hope Took the Form of Chesa Boudin Yesterday

running for DA in the city of San Francisco

Chesa spoke yesterday at Annie’s apartment

raising money telling us all he will try for

restorative justice for changing prisons and police

maybe he will win  even if he doesn’t

young and full of ideas there he is

a room of people who ask him good questions people who want

this world to be better and a few of those people

one I hadn’t seen in forty years woman named Margaret

her husband Larry introduced me to Chesa’s grandparents

years ago  (Margaret had a sewing mannequin named Cynthia as her apartment roommate)

and they became my friends his grandmother Jean called me

early every morning she couldn’t sleep so why should I is what she said

and lucky for her I couldn’t sleep either so we talked Jean and I and sometimes

she’d read me a poem.

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. I love this poem. Amazing the long train of personal connections underlying historical events. We all feel the ripple effects.
