Ham, Virginia, (Jews)

When I was in college

a friend took me on a car trip

to Virginia, to eat some famous ham.  I

wasn’t opposed to ham for reasons of religion.

Though I hadn’t eaten ham  before.

We drove across

some gorgeous mountains,

then ate Virginia ham.  I remember

thinking This is Ham but whether or not

it was delicious I don’t know. Today we will

visit that same friend and  Peter

will show his movie. My guess

is we will eat some ham.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. So you’re going to eat Smithfield Ham! Very similar to Chinese ham. Salty, delicate and DELICIOUS! Oh, how I, grand-daughter of Orthodox Jews from Virginia, would love to be in your place, eating that delicacy!

  2. it was such a pleasure not to eat ham with you and peter but eat scallops (which aren’t kosher either…but it’s ok), while sitting next to you and throughly enjoying you and peter as well your ancient friends and peter’s family. i felt at home. such a gift.
see in you ny in december,

a hug to you and peter.

  3. funny. I can picture the ride. Hi to Peter. I am off the sixteenth, but plan to be in Margaretteville. Are you free any weekday at 4?

    1. Hi Denise Yes 4 is good. Would you like to come here? I can meet you somewhere too. What day works the week of the 16th? We babysit one day which means I get the baby by 6. But pick a day and let’s try. x
