Days of Awe are Always (5778)

We have a few more days to think.

Some people like the word contemplate better.

I try being honest

about my year

about my life

not easy to know

what  I to say

about this painful year

about this country not easy

to understand although

I’ve heard many explanations

this Jew believes

in language  in the idea

of books books about anything

these ten days of books

and language  days of forgiveness

and good numbers 5778

days of warmth and all the many meals

of life and apples dipped in honey

and people coming

to drink sparkling wine we talk

about what we have to do

and how big and little life always is

and I  tell a story, maybe another

story about Delores and the vintage

jacket she gave me for my birthday

gold and black polka dots

she found in a yard sale in Greenville New York

Delores wore it dancing. She knew

I’d want to wear it dancing too.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

we live in a rent stabilized apartment where we’ve lived FOREVER on the corner of 77th and columbus. i’ve always loved this block. 76th street too. some blocks have an elusive
something, the way some buildings do. hope you can see the movie COLUMBUS.
      happy 5778. yours esther
