Some Body Parts or We Will Take Good Care of Him

On my Big List of Books I want to write,  poems, is a book of Some Body Parts.  For many reasons I have written many poems about teeth. ( I have  read very few poems about other people’s teeth.)

Teeth have always been a subject

for my poems. Mine and yours.

My father’s friend Milton Turkoff

was our family’s dentist.

His office had a funny dentist smell and Milton

didn’t talk much and he wasn’t gentle either.

But every time I sat in his dental chair

I remembered my father telling my mother

“Milton has hands just like feet.”

This morning Peter wanted to go to a dentist

and his George Kivowitz  mostly practices

in Pennsylvania so I emailed my friend Cynthia Gomez

She is a periodontist and gums

are another body part like teeth that will be

prominently featured in Some Body Parts.

Peter will see her this morning.  And she

emailed a sentence  I’ve been waiting for

for years:  We will take good care of him.

Let me tell you why I’m here, and why I hope you’ll join me.
I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I’m here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. my childhood DDS, a few houses down, barely said a word. It was a long time til I figured out it was ok to talk to dentists.
