Bernie

My friend
Laura’s father Bernie
(he introduced us)
one of my all time
favorite voices
I would like to
go to Queens
record Bernie
shouting, with so much
expression, ESTA
giving his ESTA
exasperation, love
a certain amount
of hope.
Maybe I will
change. Improve.
He thinks maybe.
For so many
years I have wanted
to record Bernie shouting
ESTA explaining
what he thinks
about Al Sharpton
(he likes him) labor movement
(oy vey)
Rachel Maddow
(yes) Orthodox neighbors
in Queens
(generous)
what’s wrong with his
big toe
how the nurse
changed his toe’s dressing
telephone systems
he sells them
why I am not rich
(no head for money,
says Bernie).
He came into my office
by mistake fifteen
years ago got off
the elevator
on the wrong
floor walked right into
my room and shouted
What’s Happening Here.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.
