BEFORE

Before I leave
for anywhere
(Kansas City! Cairo!)
I would try
to write a poem:
what I hoped
would happen,
what would Be There
when I arrived.
We are
leaving
for South Africa.
What do we look for?
Primordial trip.
Understanding
will not
be easy.
I travel
to learn
to see.

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. Have a great trip, Esther. If you get to Phalabora to the Oliphants River, look up the CARE Institute and check out the rescued baboons which Michael Blumenthal wrote about in our book “Because They Needed Me.” Not likely that you’ll get there, but just in case….
