Because I Have Been

I am much more in the personal poem category. My poems, unlike so many poems that talented friends write, they aren’t political in the Large Sense. Although I am. How my words link with what I believe is a funny and interesting question without a clear and straightforward answer. Today, for instance, I could write a poem about a woman’s work I saw this morning (and then posted on FACEBOOK). Oreo art. She takes the creamy white centers and turns them into paintings. OCD? Genius? A good poem. (Too much time on her hands?)

But because I have been

mitigating big struggles
Jews and Arabs one of many
obsessions low wage workers
list is long because
I have been wanting to avoid
reading news this summer
how difficult the world can be because I
have been trying all my life
to balance Big Struggles
with small joys real people Delores
came to visit yesterday 82 she met a New Man
with a sense of humor
told us his Alzheimers jokes
how we can continuously reinvent
ways of life we can embroider toast
in spite of all that happens
plant a path, even a small one,
to somewhere else
bright orange place
we don’t yet know

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.
