At Last Night’s Reading there was an Arc and an Ark

I don’t read my poems too often but last night

at the Bowery Poet’s Cafe a burlesque house today

I read some poems finally understood

the shape of my new book how many years have I been writing

this book without a shape without what  people call an arc

I used to think an arc of a novel was a big boat that all the characters rode

not an upside down U holding it together  at last night’s reading

when I explained that people are my poems always people

I knew that the road where these people live

is all the ark and arc I need  they don’t have to get into a boat together they can

just live side by side on one long road because living is story enough

and when a man who wrote his own version of Hamlet having already redone Lear

asked me after the reading what my book was about I said you.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.
