APOLOGY POEMS (COVID)

(Now while we are All of Us looking up old friends

to see how they are checking on other parts of our lives

because of COVID because we are home because we

are trying to understand who we were  who we are

and  who we will be how this world will change

now while we are home I look through old folders full of

handwritten ideas for instance Apology Poems

and last night I wrote a list of all the people I would like

to write apology poems to starting with my mother because

I was not an easy daughter (she was not an easy mother)

and because when my father died I tried to talk her into

learning Spanish in Cuernavaca because I wanted

to learn Spanish in Cuernavaca and I gave her three books

by Ivan Illich and she wasn’t interested in Ivan Illich she wanted

to read good novels and have Chinese food with her friends

and too often I said What about Cuernavaca.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. I read Medical Nemesis early in med school and my relationship to medicine was to a degree (not fully: how could I have gone on?) shaped by it. Around 2015, I re-read it to see if the argument was still compelling, or should be discarded on the heap of discredited youthful enthusiasms. Second time around, he seemed prescient, as right as ever.

  2. My sister Naomi passed away recently a little over a month ago. I concluding my opening of a Zoom memorial in her memory with extended family with the following apologies: I will always remember her, and apologize for once throwing a hamburger at her when we were very young, and also for the fact that I never allowed her to beat me in ping pong, only to come close.
