Alice Down the road (County Route 20)

Come on in said Alice as though she’d asked

a thousand times but this was her first

invitation in 31 years and I did. Sit down she said

and pointed me to where she wanted me to sit

yellow barcalounger facing a big TV. She sat

on the matching yellow couch.  My husband and I

are on the wall she said. Do you remember him?

A sonofabitch but he had a few good points. A cop

for 29 years. Over there’s

my daughter who died. Don’t ask me what year.

The other one’s on my dresser. Sixty three

said Alice. Never married. Why bother.

Before you go she said I’ll show you the kitchen.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. thank you so much Irwin. By the way I agree about your Catskills comments on the JC site.
I liked the piece but the Catskills I loved for many years was more or less missing.
