A Woman I Never Saw Before

in a senior residence

on West End Avenue in the 70’s

moved in a week ago she walked into

the room where I was teaching came early

to say her husband was dying

in a hospice in Charlottesville he was supposed

to die yesterday that’s what the hospice workers said

sick for five years they met 22 years ago in Santa Fe

she was a New Yorker never met a man like him before

he hiked carved wood spent time outdoors

a lot of time they were happier than she’d ever been

for nineteen years and yesterday she wasn’t sure

what to do so she thought maybe she should write it down.

Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.
