A Stranger at a Party

My friend Lisa
wonderful painter
paintings at
West Kortright Center
her friends were there
first woman I met
light linen dress
perfect color
beads that might
have been ivory she’s
a painter too
We were sitting on
an outside bench
facing Delaware
county green.
I am a midwesterner
she said.
I like Jews.
Married two of them.
Sam Katz
number one. I met
the second
at a vegetarian
restaurant
in the East Village
in the 70s.
Six kids.
I sold my
paintings
on the street.
In l986 he
lost both legs
in an accident
and the funny thing
is he became
a happier person.
Can you
believe that she said.
He’s 96 now.
What else
would you
like to know?

Esther Cohen
Let me tell you why I'm here, and why I hope you'll join me. I am here to poem, to play with words, to tell stories when I can, and to ask you for yours. Words are what I love, how I see, and what I say. Words are how I know my life, and how I find my friends. I'm here to ask you to join me. Right here. To send me your stories, and your poems. And to read mine when you can.

  1. What this tells me (and what I already knew from meeting you) is that you’re the kind of person who gives out an “I’m interested in who you are” vibe in a sincere way, not nosy!
